ELIXIR is a European research infrastructure which unites life science organisations in managing and safeguarding the increasing volume of data being generated by research. It coordinates, integrates and sustains bioinformatics resources from the different member states and enables users to access services that are vital for their research.
VIB is a life sciences research institute in Flanders, Belgium and is the lead institute of the Belgian ELIXIR node. With more than 1470 scientists from over 60 countries, VIB performs basic research into the molecular foundations of life. VIB is an excellence-based entrepreneurial institute that focuses on translating basic scientific results into pharmaceutical, agricultural and industrial applications. VIB works in close partnership with five universities − UGent, KU Leuven, University of Antwerp, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Hasselt University and is funded by the Flemish government.
The VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology (PSB) coordinates the ELIXIR Belgium node. PSB is a world-leading plant science institute with the mission to integrate genetics, genomics and bio-computing to unravel the biology of plants and to further explore the potential of plants to build a sustainable world.
The increase in data intensive analyses requires a data science cloud for research and development. This data science cloud should provide solutions for all aspects related to data: storage, management, security, analysis, integration, sharing, etc. and should be firmly embedded in and outreaching to the international context. To advance the establishment of such an infrastructure, we are hiring a Data Science Cloud Coordinator.
Job Description
* identify the research domains that would benefit from a Data Science Cloud, both from academic, government, SME and industry point of view
* identify the needs and requirements of the different stakeholders
* develop a plan to build such an infrastructure ensuring efficiency, long-term sustainability and scalability, taking into account existing infrastructures
* gather knowledge of international experts in this field and apply it to the Flemish situation
* align and integrate our effort with the developments in the ELIXIR Compute Platform
* identify and act upon opportunities to embed this infrastructure in the European and international context e.g. EOSC
* develop a business plan to fund this infrastructure sustainably
* report progress and conclusions
* in order to be effective, the successful applicant will need to stay abreast of the developments within ELIXIR, as well as related organizations and initiatives. This will require attendance at national and European meetings.
* Master or PhD in Bioinformatics, Bioscience engineering, Computational Biology, Computational Science or equivalent
* Experience in bioinformatics, life science research and data-intensive analysis is a must
* Experience with Linux/Unix environments
* Knowledge of the European Science Cloud landscape and policies and hands-on experience with HPC and Cloud environments is a plus
* Excellent coordination and project management skills
* You possess excellent communication skills
* You are able to work both independently as well as in team, meet deadlines and manage priorities to handle a diverse workload
* You are proficient in English. Knowledge of Dutch and/or French is an asset
