Staff Scientist – Bioinformatics

The KAUST Bioscience Core Lab (BCL) is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative scientist with a strong background in computational biology to join the Bioinformatics Team. BCL provides services in state-of-the-art technologies like PacBio (Sequel, Sequel II), Oxford Nanopore (GridION, PromethION), Ilumina NovaSeq 6000, 10X Chromium, Thermo Orbitrap Fusion Lumos, Q-Exactive and many others.

The scientist will play a key role in developing cutting-edge methods and applications that will push the boundaries of proteomics research and sequencing technologies.

The successful candidate must have extensive and diverse experience in designing and implementing computational solutions to improve operational efficiency and to address biological questions.

The Core Labs is service- and support-oriented; therefore, it is important for the successful candidate to be able to work under strict deadlines.

Major Responsibilities

• Ensure efficient daily operations of the Bioinformatics Team, covering data management, processing & analysis and trainings & consultations

• Lead development and optimization of novel methodologies/tools to address advanced scientific problems

• Support the laboratory and actively engage in new developments of the most advanced techniques and
methodologies

• Strategically manage scientific collaboration projects with faculty members or external partners

Qualifications & Competencies

• Ph.D. degree in bioinformatics, computational biology or a related field

• At least two years of postgraduate research experience

• Proficiency in Python, R or Perl

• Substantial experience working in an HPC Unix/Linux environment

• Expertise as a data scientist in bioinformatics with mastery in PacBio or Oxford Nanopore technologies and NGS. Additional capability in proteomics is an advantage

• Experience with AI/ML (e.g. CNN) and/or statistical analysis methodologies

• Excellent written and oral communications skills in English
