Postdoctoral Research Scientist

Columbia University
Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics
United States New York 10027

Description

The Herbert and Florence Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics (IICD) at Columbia University is an interdisciplinary initiative focused on the interplay between mathematical and computational sciences and cancer research. The IICD, directed by Professor Simon Tavaré FRS, encourages collaboration across disciplinary boundaries to develop aspects of science, engineering and the social sciences that can improve our understanding of cancer biology, origins, treatment and prevention.

As part of the Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics Postdoctoral Program, we seek up to two postdoctoral research scientists who are recent Ph.D. graduates and who are interested in developing independent and novel research in an environment that fosters multi-disciplinary, collaborative research. While these positions might suit a researcher with some post-doctoral experience, we also encourage applications from recent PhD graduates. Candidates will be mentored by at least two faculty members, at least one of whom should be based on the Morningside Heights campus of Columbia University, to be identified through interaction with the candidate.

Candidates should provide:
• CV (NIH format biosketch)
• A cover letter explaining the motivation for applying to this program
• A two-page research statement describing past accomplishments and future research plan
• Contact information for a minimum of three professional work references
• Letters of support from the potential mentors should be submitted directly to cancerdynamics@columbia.edu.

Minimum Degree Required: PhD in Mathematics, Biology, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Computational Biology, or other relevant fields.

Appointments will start in September 2020 and will be for two years in the first instance. Successful candidates will receive a competitive salary package and research support to be used towards travel, the purchase of a computer or other research-related expenses.

EEO Statement: Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran

Qualifications

We are particularly interested in applicants with strong backgrounds in the mathematical and computational sciences, biology and genomic technologies. While prior exposure to cancer research would be an advantage, the choice of successful candidates will be based on the novelty of the proposed research plan.
