The bridgingbarriers.utexas.edu/whole-communities-whole-health/ initiative, the Department of Population Health, and the Biomedical Data Science Hub in the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin invite applications for the position of Assistant Professor the novel area of Multi-ethnic Bio-‘omics.
The successful candidate for this position will be joining the UT Austin faculty as part of the provost's provost.utexas.edu/cluster-and-interdisciplinary-hiring-initiativeand will join an interdisciplinary group of scholars participating in the University's Bridging Barriers Grand Challenge initiative, Whole Communities—Whole Health. The candidate will have an appointment in one of several participating Departments in the dellmed.utexas.edu/or the cns.utexas.edu/, which may include the Biomedical Data Science Hub, and/or any of the Departments of Population Health, Statistics and Data Science, Integrative Biology, or Molecular Biosciences, and will be expected to actively participate as a core member of Whole Communities—Whole Health. Contributions to the cluster will be an important facet of the faculty member's annual performance evaluations and consideration for promotion and tenure.
bridgingbarriers.utexas.edu/whole-communities-whole-health/ is a 10-year campus-wide initiative with the goal of understanding the effects of early life adversity on health and development by building an innovative, replicable, field-based research and intervention model that leverages advances in community engagement, bio-behavioral and environmental measurements, and system data informatics. Whole Communities—Whole Health aims to revolutionize how we conduct community-based cohort studies by first working with communities and families to figure out what questions they have, and then by bringing the most advanced technology and research methods into their homes to help get the answers they need. This position aims to exploit the increasing availability of ‘omics approaches in the multi-ethnic biological characterization of genetics, epigenetics, RNA, protein, hormonal, and immune profiles (areas only beginning to generate attention) to understand and predict health and behavior outcomes.

As part of the growing Whole Communities—Whole Health Program, and strongly supported by, and in support of, the BDS Hub, the successful data science candidate will apply their disciplinary skills to advance the theory and applications of multilevel and big data in health and behavior biosciences. The successful applicant will be a data scientist with a strong biosciences background who can appropriately collaborate with biologists, integrate such data with available biological knowledge, and create strategies for merging biological data with complex individual and group-level sociocultural data. We seek individuals interested in applying their training and methods development to the study of human diversity and multi-ethnic subgroups, differential and comparative biology targeted toward understanding adversity, and how adversity sequelae are differentially or variably expressed in underrepresented groups.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:
• Conduct, publish, and disseminate a balance of methodological and collaborative research in biomedical data science.
• Develop and maintain an independent methodologically oriented research program which will include attracting and maintaining external funding.
• Train graduate students and/or teach courses as needed.
• Participate in professional, university, and community service appropriate to rank.
• Participate vigorously in the Whole Communities—Whole Health initiative.
• PhD (or related doctoral degree) in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Data Science, Systems Biology, Computer Sciences (with machine learning), Biostatistics, or a closely related quantitative area, with demonstrated potential for excellence in research.
• Demonstrated expertise in the development of new methods.
• Ability and demonstrated interest in collaborative research biomedical investigation and/or public health investigation.
• Demonstrated excellent teaching skills.
• Outstanding leadership skills.
• Eligible for a faculty appointment with UT Austin.
