Description

The University of Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) is hiring a full-time informatics analyst to support diverse biological research projects. The successful applicant will join the established Research Informatics Solutions (RIS) team, composed of twelve PhD level informatics analysts. The RIS team fosters cutting edge collaboration between informatics analysts and domain researchers, primarily within the medical and biological sciences, leveraging the rich computational and knowledge environment offered by MSI and the University. This position is seated on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis Campus.

Successful candidates will have excellent communication skills, a strong analytical/computational background combined with demonstrated life sciences analysis experience. Job tasks will necessitate a high degree of organization and comfort working as part of an interdisciplinary research team on a diverse set of projects. RIS analysts are frequently expected to work independently to identify combinations of existing tools to address novel analysis requests, and in some cases develop new tools to bridge gaps in the domain literature.

As part of an interdisciplinary team, the successful candidate is expected to:

Carry out consultative informatics services and research with researchers and faculty campuswide.
Evaluate current literature and develop appropriate informatics strategies as needed for our collaborations.
Develop, prototype, and execute analytic workflows.
Participate in developing and presenting tutorials on basic informatics workflows.
Appropriately document work conducted, both to comply with RIS reporting requirements, and to allow the preparation of any analytical reports required by the principal investigator of the project.

The ideal candidates will have advanced knowledge of high-throughput sequencing technologies with demonstrated practical experience in developing and carrying out analytical strategies. Ideal areas of experience include the analysis of gene expression datasets derived from RNA-seq, SNPs and structural variants derived from DNA-seq and either dataset derived from emerging single cell methodologies.

Required Qualifications

Doctorate in computational sciences with significant biology experience, or doctorate in the life sciences with significant informatics experience.
2+ years of work experience in the life sciences as primary or secondary research field.
Hands on experience in developing and carrying out data analytical strategies and pipelines in the context of genomics.
Experience in handling and analyzing data sets from high-throughput generation processes, such as DNA/RNA sequencing.
Experience and general proficiency with a statistical language (e.g. R, MATLAB) plus currently standard genomics tools (e.g. BWA, Hisat2, FreeBayes).
Must be able to understand and translate life scientist researchers' scientific goals into analytical strategies and process requirements.
Must be able to function as part of an interactive team while demonstrating self-initiative to achieve project’s goals and group’s mission.
Excellent oral and written English communication and interpersonal skills.
Must be able to begin employment within 6 weeks of offer.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong general computational and programming skills (Perl, Python, Java, C/C++ or similar) and competence with UNIX shell environment.
Research background in genomics, genetics, molecular biology or computational biology.
Research background in image processing.
Critical and independent thinking.
Data modeling skills are highly desirable.
