Position Summary:

An individual is needed to assist wheat mutant trait discovery in the hexaploid wheat ‘Brundage' (genome AABBDD ) and diploid wheat ‘DV92' (genome AmAm). The incumbent will be responsible for managing two established mutant populations (20K lines), preparing large-scale DNA pools, leading next generation sequencing for mutation discovery, analyzing sequence data to identify mutations, and investigating selected mutant lines for trait discovery. The incumbent is expected to work independently and accurately, while reporting and consulting with the Project Director (PD), on every aspect of research. The incumbent is expected to design experiments, enter and analyze data, review literature, and prepare manuscripts for publication. The individual is also expected to assist in writing grant proposals independently and in cooperation with the PD, and participate and present papers and lectures at the state, regional, or national professional meetings when funding is available and allowed by the PD. The incumbent will be under the direction of UI faculty/PD and will be expected to work in collaboration with other scientists, scientific aides, research staff, growers, workers, and graduate student(s) in the program. The incumbent is responsible to supervise workers at times and report every aspect of his/her activities to the program director. Annual renewal of this position is pending on individual's performance and the funding availability in the Wheat Molecular Genetics program in the University of Idaho.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Education: B.S. degree in any aspect of Agronomy, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Statistics, or closely related field, preferably with an emphasis on large sequence data analysis, plus a minimum of 2 years of experience in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling approximately 6 years.

- Research Experience: Experience/familiarity with analyzing high-throughput sequence data, conducting plant molecular research, and investigating value-added traits such as yield, quality and herbicide resistance.

- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a group.

- Demonstrated publication records in closely related field. Ability to publish research journal articles related to research efforts in a timely manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

- M.S. or Ph.D. degree in any aspect of Agronomy, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Statistics, or closely related field, preferably with an emphasis on large sequence data analysis.

- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to give full attention to tasks at hand.

Experience with genome and/or transcriptome sequencing and data analysis.

Research experience with wheat and other cereal crops.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

- Must be able to lift and/or otherwise move 50 pounds. Ability to work outside for long periods of time under inclement weather conditions.
